Thinking through a decision

Compare options and explain why you chose one.

Updated 18 October 2026 · Practical learning guide

Name the decision and its constraints

Write the decision as a question, with the audience, deadline and non-negotiable requirements. Decide which criteria matter before asking for a recommendation.

  • Which outcome matters most?
  • What evidence is available and what is uncertain?
  • What realistic alternatives exist, including taking no action?
  • Who owns the decision and who will be affected?

Compare options using the same criteria

Use AI to organise evidence and reveal trade-offs. Keep source facts separate from interpretations. Check whether changing one assumption would change the preferred option.

Practical example
Compare options A and B against cost, accessibility and delivery time.
Use only the supplied evidence. Mark missing values unknown.
Explain trade-offs without assigning invented scores.
Show which assumptions would change the recommendation.

Keep a decision note

Your note should make the reasoning reviewable, even when another option was plausible.

Practical example
Decision: [what I chose]
Reasons: [criteria and evidence]
Alternative considered: [and why not selected]
Uncertainty: [what remains unknown]
Review trigger: [what would make us reconsider]
